Writing Lessons

About a year ago, after years of fantasizing about becoming a writer, I joined a small, intimate group of fellow writers in Natchez for a monthly writers group. I had no idea how much this experience could change my life.

If I were to be able to go back and give my wannabee-writer self advice, I would say “stop dreaming and start doing.” I wasted so much time waiting for the right time, the right mental space or an engraved invitation from the stars to get started. There really is only one way to start, and that is to start. As my sensei said once, the hardest belt to earn is not black, it is the white belt you wear on your first lesson, the one you get just for showing up. That’s the one most people will never earn.

Having the writing group made getting started simpler and inviting, a soft landing, as the kids say. It is easier than you think to read your work before a group of fellow writers. Sure it is scary at first, but ultimately the progress you make from comments and critiques from peers is empowering; progress is rapid. There are so many online communities available that there is surely a good soft-landing out there for everyone. Find it.

I have learned that storytelling is a powerful tool for self-reflection. You learn critical thinking, as you map out logic, reasoning, cause and effect, in moving the characters through the story. Navigating the intricacies of a character's development will allow you to vicariously find creative solutions to problems in your own life. What a wonderful time in history to have such a tool. We could all use a way to make sense of the chaos in “these uncertain times.” Are you disillusioned with the world you live in? Create your own. Feeling powerless? Give a character the power you lack.

I would love to say I’m a published author, but it is still a work in progress. However, being able to create worlds filled with characters I know and intimately understand is transformative. This past year of writing has altered my perspective on life, boosted my confidence, and become an integral part of my journey towards self-discovery and growth. Best of all, I’ve produced work I am proud to share. It’s your turn.
